Albinius Asper, mourning his beloved wife, and the sharp-witted god Mercury are the central characters in this thrilling story. While looking for the deceased Secundia, the two dissimilar companions undertake a turbulent journey through the underworld and meet personae from Roman Trier: charioteers, wine dealers, and vain matrons. Mercury is interested in only one thing: bringing the melancholy Asper to forget his wife by offering him numerous temptations.

“In the Realm of Shadows” is a museum experience in a new dimension never seen before. The most up-to-date technology projects the Asper’s journey onto tall original Roman burial monuments and wall surfaces. A poetic play of light awakening the ancient reliefs to new life is created through a combination of centuries-old, authentic original exhibits and images, speech, and sounds.

This exclusive spectacle was developed together with internationally known artists and implemented with up-to-date technology and artistic craft. The script writing by well-known authors was supported by archaeologists and historians from the museum. The voices of Christoph Maria Herbst and Peter Striebeck give the central characters of Mercury and Albinius Asper a truly special character.

The 45-minute performance takes place two times daily, Tuesday to Sunday, outside normal opening hours by reservation.
